Offit Kurman Attorneys Secure Patent for My Wine Guide®

May 27, 2025

Offit Kurman principal attorneys Matthew D’Annunzio and Greg Grissett have secured a U.S. patent for My Wine Guide® ’s (MWG) proprietary SommOne® software for parsing wine data. The patented technology allows SommOne® to read, parse, and interpret unstructured wine data, enabling seamless integration with any leading restaurant POS or inventory system, like Toast.

To be read automatically, wine data needs to be interpreted based on the infinite variations applied by restaurant staff for purposes ranging from ringing up sales to keeping inventory. Once integrated with SommOne®, changes in a restaurant’s point of sale system are automatically reflected in digital and printed wine and beverage menus.

Offit Kurman’s diligent patent drafting demonstrated the practical application of MWG’s inventive software. Through careful claims presentation and proactive engagement with the patent examiner, Matt and Greg persuaded USPTO to deem the invention patent eligible, securing valuable patent rights for MWG.

“Offit effectively grasped the capabilities of our technology and ably presented them to advocate for our patent,” commented John Kirst, MWG’s Managing Partner. “Their efforts have expanded our core technology, adding significant value.”

Matt D’Annunzio, MWG’s Outside General Counsel, concentrates his practice on business litigation and acting as outside general counsel for various enterprises. Greg Grissett is part of the firm’s Intellectual Practice Group and routinely advises companies on technology transactions through drafting and negotiating joint development agreements, software development and service agreements, and licenses for all forms of IP.
