Offit Kurman Congratulates Esteemed Attorney and Special Counsel Martin Garbus on NYU Law’s Establishment of the Martin Garbus First Amendment Fellowship
Offit Kurman is proud to congratulate Special Counsel Martin Garbus on being honored by New York University School of Law with the creation of the inaugural Martin Garbus First Amendment Fellowship. The fellowship recognizes Martin’s long-standing impact on First Amendment advocacy and his distinguished career advancing constitutional rights.
Established by NYU Law in tribute to Martin, an alumnus of the institution, the fellowship will support J.D. candidates who dedicate their summer to work focused on First Amendment matters. The program will award one student who secures a qualifying internship anywhere in the United States and demonstrates dedication to issues involving freedom of speech, press, or related advocacy.
The selected Martin Garbus Fellow will receive a $12,000 stipend, provided in place of a standard PILC Summer Funding grant, to support their public interest work. The fellowship is designed to encourage and expand opportunities for emerging legal talent motivated to advance First Amendment principles.
“Marty Garbus has spent a lifetime advancing the principles that define our legal profession, but what sets him apart is his generosity toward others,” said Ted Offit, Co-Founder of Offit Kurman. “As a newcomer to New York, I experienced that firsthand. Marty welcomed me without hesitation, offered guidance, and became a mentor and friend. It’s no surprise that the next generation of lawyers will be supported through this fellowship named in his honor. I’m proud of Marty and inspired by the impact he continues to make.”
Martin’s career spans decades of influential litigation and advocacy. His work has contributed to shaping national dialogue on free expression and civil liberties, and the fellowship named in his honor ensures that his legacy will continue through the efforts of rising law students committed to these foundational issues.
