Marty Garbus Represents Steven Donziger in Closely-Watched Contempt-of-Court Case

May 11, 2021

Legendary trial attorney, Offit Kurman’s own Marty Garbus, has appeared before the Supreme Court and trial and appellate courts throughout the country, often focusing on First Amendment and civil rights issues. His professional career has included tackling some of the country’s most challenging and high-profile lawsuits and winning landmark cases, many of which have resulted in changes to laws on a nationwide basis.

His latest case went to trial on May 10, 2021. Garbus is representing embattled lawyer Steven Donziger in contempt-of-court case, one that is being closely watched by hundreds of leading human rights organizations and advocates around the world. Donziger, a now-disbarred environmental lawyer, sued Chevron (then Texaco) in 2011 on behalf of 30,000 Indigenous Ecuadorians and went on to win a $9.5 billion oil pollution judgment against the company that Chevron has refused to pay. What has followed are numerous retaliatory actions against Donziger who denies Chevron’s claims of fraudulent activity and has refused to comply with requests of the court to turn over information and devices and not benefit financially from the judgement. He is now being held in civil contempt.

Marty Garbus’ efforts on behalf of Steven Donziger have garnered significant media attention.
