Behind the Headlines: What Family Lawyers Need to Know About Representing High-Profile Clients

Representing high-profile clients in family law matters requires more than a strong understanding of divorce, custody, and financial settlements. For celebrities, business executives, politicians, professional athletes, and other prominent individuals, family disputes can carry significant legal, financial, professional, and reputational consequences. Family lawyers must therefore combine legal expertise with discretion, strategic judgment, and a thorough understanding of the unique challenges their clients face.

Confidentiality and reputation management are often central to these cases. Attorneys must help clients understand what information may become public, identify appropriate privacy protections, and develop strategies for responding to media attention or unauthorized disclosures. While confidentiality cannot always be guaranteed, careful case management and thoughtful communication can help minimize unnecessary exposure.

Complex financial matters may also require specialized expertise. High-profile clients may have substantial business interests, investment portfolios, trusts, real estate holdings, intellectual property, and variable compensation. Family lawyers frequently collaborate with forensic accountants, financial advisers, valuation experts, and tax professionals to identify assets, assess financial obligations, and pursue equitable outcomes.

When children are involved, protecting their privacy and best interests remains paramount. Attorneys must consider custody arrangements, demanding professional schedules, travel, security concerns, and the potential impact of public scrutiny on the family. A measured, child-focused approach can help reduce conflict and preserve stability during an already difficult transition.

Equally important is selecting the appropriate dispute-resolution strategy. Negotiation, mediation, and other available forms of alternative dispute resolution may offer greater privacy and control than public litigation, although court proceedings may be necessary to protect a client's rights. Effective counsel evaluates each option in light of the client's circumstances, objectives, and long-term interests.

Ultimately, representing high-profile clients requires balancing assertive advocacy with sound judgment and discretion. The most effective family lawyers understand that success is not measured solely by the outcome of a settlement or trial, but also by their ability to protect their clients' interests, manage risk, and guide families through complex personal transitions with professionalism and care.

G2. Designing Secure Practices: Cybersecurity, Data Privacy, Contractual Provisions, and Insurance Risks for Architects (4:00 PM - 5:30 PM) Architects and design professionals increasingly rely on cloud platforms, BIM software, and digital tools to manage sensitive data, creating cybersecurity and privacy risks. A single incident can trigger liability claims, regulatory obligations, reputational harm, and insurance challenges. Yet many firms underestimate how contracts, insurance, and internal practices intersect during a breach. This program offers legal and insurance perspectives on cyber risk in architecture, examining liability exposure, risky contract provisions, and mitigation strategies. A cyber insurance expert will explain policy responses, coverage gaps, coordination with professional liability, and best practices for aligning insurance with contractual risk and protecting firms from evolving cyber threats. Learning Objectives: Identify key cybersecurity and data privacy risks faced by architecture firms and explain how these risks can impact professional liability and project outcomes. Analyze common contractual provisions to determine which clauses may increase exposure to cyber incidents and propose strategies to mitigate these risks. Evaluate the scope and limitations of cyber insurance policies, including coordination with professional liability coverage, to determine how a policy would respond in a breach scenario. Develop actionable risk management strategies by integrating legal, contractual, and insurance considerations to protect sensitive client and project data.
