Rezoning approval paves way for east side Frederick Corner development

An industrial area on Frederick’s east side is ready to be transformed into a commercial destination following approval of a rezoning request Thursday.

Peterson Cos., a Virginia-based developer, plans to develop Frederick Corner on roughly 14 acres at Monocacy Boulevard and East South Street on the edge of the Frederick Brick Works site.

According to the plans, the project will include 90,000 square feet of fast-casual restaurants and a gas station. Peterson’s website projects a 2018 groundbreaking and 2019 grand opening.

Dave Severn, a land-use attorney representing the developer, has pointed out, and city staff members agreed, that the zoning was a mistake, though.

According to the staff report for the rezoning request, city planning officials were not aware of several facts at the time that would have allowed them to zone the property adequately.
