Pilar Nichols and Jemi Cho Join Offit Kurman in Bethesda, MD

Bethesda, MD | February 25, 2019 Offit Kurman is pleased to announce today that Pilar C. Nichols and Mi (Jemi) Cho have joined the firm’s offices in Bethesda, MD. Ms. Nichols and Ms. Cho will serve as attorneys with the firm’s Family Law Practice Group. They are two of three Family Law attorneys to join Offit Kurman this month, alongside Sharie Albers in Tysons Corner, VA.

Pilar C. Nichols is a Principal attorney with extensive trial experience and practice in various areas of Family Law, including the litigation and settlement of divorce, child custody and visitation, mediation, spousal and child support, property division (including complex property issues and those that require business valuations), negotiating and drafting of separation agreements, guardianship proceedings, and adoptions.

Ms. Nichols has extensive experience in representing clients in domestic violence protective orders and any accompanying criminal charges, as well as in divorces involving the spouses of international organizations, such as the World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank. She is regularly court-appointed to represent children in contested custody cases as child counsel. Ms. Nichols is also a trained mediator, having completed the general mediation training and both the property division and custody training. In addition to her family law practice, Ms. Nichols is a former criminal prosecutor and currently practices criminal and traffic defense, including appeals at all stages of post-conviction.

Aside from her work with clients, Ms. Nichols has held numerous leadership positions in Maryland legal associations, such the Bar Association of Montgomery County and the Maryland Hispanic Bar Association, where she previously served as President. A frequent presenter on family law topics, she also serves as a faculty member at the Judicial College of Maryland and the Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law. In recognition of her leadership and service in the legal community, Ms. Nichols has received honors such as the “Outstanding Leadership” award by the MSBA Young Lawyers Section and the University of Maryland, Francis King School of Law for “outstanding leadership” and “continued commitment to diversity.” Additionally, she was recently named to the 2019 “Top 50 Women Maryland Super Lawyers” and "Top 100 Maryland Super Lawyers” lists.

Jemi Cho assists clients in all aspects of divorce including child custody, child support, and the division of property and assets. In addition, Ms. Cho handles traffic, criminal and protective orders.

Ms. Cho understands that each client has a unique set of challenges, issues and needs. Using her negotiating skills, she communicates with opposing counsel to reach the most advantageous resolution for each client. She assists her clients with compassion and empathy. Her experiences fuel her passion to assist clients during a hardship.

In law school, as a certified student attorney, Ms. Cho developed and implemented case strategies for child support, probate, guardianship, and social security disability cases. She drafted motions individually and jointly, including motions for contempt, appeals of dismissals, probate petitions, and affidavits. Additionally, as a Rule 16 attorney, Ms. Cho handled criminal and traffic cases, including a jury trial.
