Offit Kurman Welcomes New Attorneys in Bethesda, MD
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Bethesda, MD—Monday, January 5, 2015 Stephen Nichols and Edward A. Bloom have joined Offit Kurman, the fastest-growing law firm in the mid-Atlantic region. With decades of experience serving as counsel for prominent corporations and as litigators in noteworthy trials, each attorney brings signature strengths and accomplishments in three essential legal areas to Offit Kurman’s Bethesda, Maryland group. Stephen Nichols is a bankruptcy attorney, formerly of Cooter, Mangold, Tompert & Karas. Real estate and business law attorney Edward Bloom joins from international law firm K&L Gates. “Ed and Steve are titans in their fields,” said Ted Offit, co-founder and managing principal of Offit Kurman. “Individually, each is a major asset; together with the legal network the firm has to offer, they’re a force to be reckoned with. That’s great news for us, but most importantly, our clients.” Bloom and Nichols share Mr. Offit’s client-centric attitude, citing the advantages of the firm’s compensation model. They agree that the model, which rewards all practitioners based on the same impartial standards, has clear benefits for clients: “There’s complete transparency and everyone is treated the same,” said Mr. Nichols. “There’s no politicking here, and I’m not penalized financially if I refer my client to another lawyer in the firm. And there’s no incentive for anyone to turn down work, so clients can expect no one other than the absolute best individual to work on their cases.”
“I am a local business and real estate lawyer who engages in a significant amount of networking and having offices all over the region is quite beneficial to the clients,” Mr. Bloom remarked. “The beauty of this platform, besides its ideal size, is that attorneys can hop in a car and meet with a client in thirty minutes or less.” He added that Offit Kurman’s approach offers wonderful benefits for his clients, which allows him to access local lawyers within the Firm in other practice areas. “If I cannot handle the particular matter, I know that I am quickly able to find someone who can,” he said. Ed also appreciates being able to provide legal services at significantly lower rates than he was previously able to charge. The other attorneys at Offit Kurman—over 100 strong—can also count on Bloom and Nichols to deliver the legal guidance that has earned each local and national recognition. For Mr. Bloom the consortium is a new one. For Mr. Nichols, entry to the firm is a sort of homecoming: he will be reuniting with Ronald Ogens, John Raftery and Bryn Sherman, with whom he made his name at the disbanded Bethesda law firm Deckelbaum, Ogens & Raftery. He aims to continue building his distinctive practice, seeking resolutions on behalf of creditors and debtors in Maryland, D.C., and Virginia. His recent endeavors include representing clients in claims of over $20 million and individuals in Chapter 11 bankruptcies. Mr. Nichols has also argued in courts of appeals, and has been involved in many of the region’s largest bankruptcy cases. Mr. Bloom has had his share of career-making moments, too, including handling a real estate closing at the White House. In his experience with real estate developers, corporate enterprises and construction companies, Mr. Bloom has assisted with numerous national and local significant transactions and prodigious development projects. He has been named as a top real estate attorney by Best Lawyers in America for four years running, and comes recommended by leading developers in the D.C. metro area.
