Offit Kurman Health Care Joseph Kelley III Elected to AHLA Task Force Leadership, Delivers Presentations to Philadelphia Alliance

Philadelphia, PA | July 15, 2016 Joseph T. Kelley has been gaining prominence in the health care law community. Last month, the American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA) selected Mr. Kelley, a health care attorney and principal at Offit Kurman, as part of its leadership to help head up the Association’s Behavioral Health Task Force. Days after attending the Leadership Development Program at the AHLA Annual Meeting, he gave a presentation before the Philadelphia Alliance of Community Services Providers.


And this Tuesday, July 19th, Mr. Kelley will return to the Philadelphia Alliance to deliver yet another presentation, entitled “DOL’s Final Rule on White Collar Wage and Hour Exemptions: Tips for Governance and Compliance.”


Established after the 1997 merger of the National Health Lawyers Association and the American Academy of Healthcare Attorneys, the AHLA is a nonprofit professional association dedicated to legal issues in the field of health care. The organization provides its more than 13,000 members with continuing, in-person education programs as well as access to exclusive industry publications and distance learning opportunities. In his role at the Behavioral Health Task Force, Mr. Kelley will advise and help lead the organization on federal and state laws concerning the privacy, reimbursement, involuntary commitment, and other issues that impact people living with mental illness, substance abuse disorders, developmental disabilities, and related conditions.


At the AHLA’s invitation, Mr. Kelley attended the Leadership Development Program at the AHLA Annual Meeting from June 25th-29th. The day after the Annual Meeting, on June 30th, he and  Bob Olsen of Compass Cyber Security of Baltimore presented “HIPAA Risk Assessments: Why Worry Now?” for the Philadelphia Alliance of Community Services Providers. Compass Cyber Security, a leading business and information consulting firm, became an Offit Kurman client and collaborator following Mr. Olsen’s CEO interview with citybizlist.


The Alliance brings together leaders of nonprofit and for-profit organizations that provide community-based health and human services including for behavioral health, substance use disorder, autism, intellectual disabilities, educational services and home care. During their two-hour talk, Mr. Kelley and Mr. Olsen addressed the Alliance’s members on the importance of performing Security Risk Assessments for HIPAA compliance as well as those Assessments’ use as a governance tool to protect directors and senior management.


Mr. Kelley’s presentation on Tuesday will be the second in a series of a presentations titled “Employment as Enterprise Risk in the Human Services Industry.” Last year, he presented an overview of the proposed DOL rule along with other DOL, NLRB, EEOC initiatives and federal and state law developments affecting the industry.
