Offit Kurman Attorney Jason Klein Quoted in Washington Lawyer Article About Cannabis Business Opportunities and Challenges

Bethesda MD | April 10, 2018 Jason Klein, an attorney with Offit Kurman’s Cannabis Law Practice Group, was quoted in a recent Washington Lawyer article entitled “Risky Business Clients, Cannabis & the Law.

The article, which appears in the magazine’s April 2018 issue, interviews several industry leaders on the unique financial opportunities and legal challenges cannabis businesses face. The article also charts the “explosive growth” of the cannabis market and delves into the ongoing questions and political disputes in the gray area between state-led cannabis legalization efforts and federal statute. Mr. Klein and others profiled in the piece assert that regardless of one’s political stance toward the subject, it is time to recognize the reality that cannabis is a thriving, serious business—and that it is poised for even greater growth in the years to come.

“When medical marijuana takes hold in the state, it creates jobs and investment opportunities,” Mr. Klein told the magazine. “Once that state allows for recreational use, it quickly creates more jobs and more investment opportunities.”

Mr. Klein also commented on his role as an attorney and advisor for cannabis companies, referring to the legal practice area as “business law with a twist”:

“Think about all the things you need to do for any start-up business, and then add some extra concerns and needs because it is such a regulated industry. So, you are answering questions like, how do we raise money? How do we hire employees? How do we get this from being a plan to an operational business? And then you address whatever the state law requires for licensing and other compliance.”
