Longtime Venable Bankruptcy Attorney Heads to Offit Kurman

Richard L. Wasserman Featured in the Baltimore Business Journal

Bankruptcy attorney Richard L. Wasserman, who spent 40 years in the Baltimore office of Venable LLP working on cases including the Enron aftermath, has joined Offit Kurman.

Wasserman departed under the firm's retirement program, but wanted to continue working. Wasserman specializes in Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases and restructuring plans.

Knowing he was scheduled to retire under Venable's plan, Wasserman said he looked for other opportunities. After reading an article about Offit Kurman's plans for growth, he called CEO Ted Offit and eventually got offered a job.

Venable declined to comment.

Wasserman, who started at Offit Kurman less than a week ago, said the transition has been "a bit overwhelming" but he is excited about the opportunity. So far, he has spent the first few days learning the firm's systems and meeting people. He already knows a couple of attorneys in Offit Kurman's bankruptcy practice, so that has helped make the transition a little bit easier.

"It came time for a fresh start," Wasserman said. "It's a new stage, and I'm very excited." He described Offit Kurman as "entrepreneurial" and said the firm's approach to serving middle-market clients was a good fit for him. Venable is more of a national firm with a D.C. focus, Wasserman said.

At Offit Kurman, he will have more opportunities to do mediation with clients and be more involved with American Bar Association activities. He also said he will have more flexibility to be involved in the community. Wasserman is a member of the board of directors and the treasurer of Maryland Legal Aid.
