Jay M. Levin to Speak at ABA Property Insurance Law Committee 2019 Spring Conference

May 7, 2019 | Philadelphia, PA Offit Kurman attorney Jay M. Levin has been selected as a featured speaker at the American Bar Association Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section’s Property Insurance Law Committee 2019 Spring Conference.

The Property Insurance Law Committee is one of the foremost organizations for property insurance lawyers and insurance professionals around the United States. The committee provides education, networking, and career development opportunities for members and event attendees. Each year, the Committee holds a conference featuring speakers who offer guidance and updates on important legal and practical issues facing the insurance industry.

The topic for the 2019 Spring Conference is “Evolution: Property Insurance Law from Cargo to Crypto.” The conference will be held Wednesday, May 8th through Friday, May 10th at the JW Marriott in Austin, Texas. According to the committee, the event “will focus on how utilizing, adapting and responding to emerging technology and economic developments,” touching on topics such as increasingly intangible losses, use of drones in the adjusting process, blockchain, cryptocurrency, the growth of the sharing economy, and more.

Mr. Levin is scheduled to co-present the conference’s first session on Thursday, May 9th at 8:00am, alongside Len Murphy of PLRB. Their presentation is titled “History of Property Insurance: From Boats to Blockchain.” Together, Mr. Levin and Mr. Murphy will offer a history of property insurance—from its origins in the maritime hull and cargo context to new, computer-related coverages. The two attorneys will also discuss the evolution of policy forms, principles of policy interpretation, and common law insurance law doctrines that continue to have significance for property insurance coverage disputes.

At Offit Kurman, Mr. Levin is an insurance recovery attorney and serves as the chair of the firm’s Insurance Recovery Practice Group. He focuses his practice on representing policyholders in disputes with insurance companies involving all types of insurance coverage. Mr. Levin has extensive litigation experience in multi-million dollar property insurance coverage cases, including suits involving policy construction and application, cause and origin, valuation, and business interruption issues.

Mr. Levin is an experienced appellate lawyer with over thirty years of experience in briefing and arguing appeals in state and federal court. In addition to insurance coverage cases, he has argued cases involving indemnity agreements, case dispositive procedural issues, tort liability, and criminal law. He also counsels policyholders in non-litigation contexts, analyzing coverage after a loss has occurred or claim has been made, assisting policyholders in responding to inquiries and in pointing out errors in the carrier’s coverage position, and advising clients and evaluating coverage in connection to policy renewals.

A sought-after writer and presenter on insurance topics, Mr. Levin has spoken at dozens of programs sponsored by the ABA, American Conference Institute, PLI, Mealey’s, the Pennsylvania Bar Institute, the Urban Land Institute, and other organizations.
