If… a simple two-letter word that carries so much burden, and so much possibility. If I win the lottery. If I move across the world. If I had just done things differently. If forces us to be introspective and challenges us to consider the otherwise unthinkable. If is a pretty heavy word for only being two letters.
This week’s legalese phrase is si oontingat:
Latin: If it happens. Words of condition in old conveyances. 10 Coke, 42a.
Si oontingat is essentially the fancier Latin way of providing for contingencies in a contract. It used to be used a lot in real property conveyances and associated estate planning where people wanted their land to stay in the family. For instance, my land goes to my firstborn son, but if it happens that he is not around anymore, then it goes to my second son. So, if it happens that you don’t want to say “if”, say “si oontingat” instead.
