What Do You Want To Do When You Grow Up?

As Published in The Daily Record

What do you want to be when you grow up? Kids get asked this question all the time, but not adults.

I still ask myself this question. I would love to be a Supreme Court justice, women’s rights advocate, professional baker, physicist, fitness trainer, or engineer. The list goes on.

Which brings me to the fact I finally had an opportunity to watch the CNN movie on Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Every female professional must watch it!

Even if you’re not a lawyer, you will find Ginsburg impressive. Let’s start with the fact that she became a pop culture icon in her 80s, in large part for her dissenting opinions. (I totally have a “Notorious R.B.G.” T-shirt.)

Though she is small in stature, Ginsburg’s words make up for it. She has been one of the biggest advocates for women’s equality in history. Her legal career is legendary. There are a ton of books and articles written about her and her incredible career; I highly recommend reading as many as you can. (You can start with Ginsburg in her own words.)

Watching “RBG” made me feel like I have done nothing with my life. (I’m exaggerating only a little.) She attended law school while caring for a small child as well as a husband, a fellow student, dealt with cancer. She did her work and coordinated his. She went from a law professor to arguing before the Supreme Court in no time at all. She became the second female Supreme Court justice. Oh, and she works out all the time and may be in better shape than many lawyers half her age. (And her supporters appreciate this very much.)

I cannot help but be impressed by her and inspired to do more and work harder.

So, when your profession has you down, just think of RBG and all of the hurdles she overcame to become who she is today. And remember that you are never too old to have an idol and think about what you want to do when you grow up. (But let’s just hope that idol is not still Batman.)
