What the USEF’s Newly Formed Equine Transaction Transparency Task Force Means for Horse Sellers and Agents

In response to requests from its members, the United States Equestrian Federation recently formed a new task force to assess transparency in equine transactions and to present its findings to the Board of Directors together with recommendations for policy and rule change.  While the USEF cautions that it does not intend to become involved with or regulate transactions, it does intend to make resources available so that those purchasing or leasing a horse can make a fully informed decision by understanding the relationship between the parties, the commissions and reasons for commissions, and state and federal laws applying to the transaction.

As the USEF moves towards rolling out these resources to the membership, sellers and agents in the industry need to prepare for transactions to involve greater scrutiny from the buyer’s side, and a court in the event a dispute arises.  In our previous two-part article, we detailed the law governing transactions in Florida.   With the winter circuits now over, it is critical that sellers and agents understand the laws that apply in the states where they will sell or lease horses and have compliant contracts prepared.
