Many, if not most, family law cases will settle either before filing in court or while the case is pending. There are many paths to reaching a settlement, and in my experience, mediation is one of the most effective.
Mediation is a process in which the parties, either with or without counsel, will meet with a legal professional for several hours sometimes for several days to allow that legal professional to impartially guide them through the issues in the case and assist them in reaching a resolution.
Mediators, while they are often lawyers, are not allowed to answer legal questions since a lawyer cannot advise people on opposite sides of a dispute.
I have used mediation many times to settle cases and it’s important to recognize that the parties, not the mediator, are the decision-makers. The mediator is a tool to use to get to a settlement, not the judge.
