Yesterday, the members of the Howard County Chamber had the pleasure of meeting the County’s Interim Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Michael Martirano. The Chamber held its State of the School System Address during lunch at the Sheraton Columbia Town Center.
His vision for the system is that of Learning and Leading with Equity. He has zero tolerance for bullying, and recognizes the high level of fiduciary responsibility he owes to the taxpayers given the huge budget of the school system. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Martirano previously when he addressed the board of the Chamber. Each time I see him, I like him more. He seems to have a very clear direction, and his priorities are certain. His popularity will be challenged however, with the redistricting that is happening in many communities. He recognizes the emotions associated with the process, but defends the process as a result of systemic prior failures to comply with policies regarding resources.
