Marks consisting of a single letter are difficult to protect. The Washington Nationals and the Chicago Cubs (each of which use stylized versions of the letter “W” to promote its team) recently challenged the USPTO’s proposed registration of a stylized “W” for WalletHub (a social networking site relating to personal finance). The dispute was resolved by restricting the applicant’s registration to exclude any use of the mark in connection with baseball.
