Yoga guru Bikram Choudhury and his company recently asked a federal appellate court to revive copyright claims previously filed against a yoga studio formed by Choudhury’s former students. Choudhury claims the “Bikram Sequence” of 26 yoga postures is both a compilation of works and a work of choreography, and therefore entitled to protection under copyright law. A lower court ruled the applicable copyrights protect Choudhury’s books and videos regarding the Bikram Sequence, but not the performance of the yoga poses referenced in such books and videos.
