On January 22, 2015, a photographer named Jacobus Rentmeester sued Nike, Inc. for copyright infringement. Rentmeester took the iconic picture of Michael Jordan mid-air, which first appeared in a 1984 edition of LIFE magazine. Nike’s used this picture to create its “Jumpman” logo of Jordan’s silhouette. Rentmeester claims Nike breached the terms of its license to use the image, and he is now seeking to receive a share of the profits on Nike’s Jordan-branded merchandise (which generated $3.2 billion in sales in 2014) and to stop sales of all such products.
