David Adjmi, the playwright of 3C, an off-Broadway play that incorporated elements based on Three’s Company (a television sitcom that ran from 1977 to 1984), filed a lawsuit in New York to determine whether 3C violates copyrights in Three’s Company. In the Complaint, Adjmi asserted 3C incorporates only limited elements of Three’s Company (for the purposes of parody) and 3C is an original work that deserves its own, separate copyright. Alternatively, the holder of the Three’s Company copyrights claimed 3C is an unauthorized derivative work that infringes on the Three’s Company copyrights.
