Friday Factoid: Google Books Held to be Protected Under Fair Use Doctrine

One may lawfully use or publish excerpts of another’s copyright protected work, if such use falls within definition of “fair use” under copyright law. In November 2013, a federal judge ruled that Google’s practice of digitizing millions of books and posting small portions of the scanned images in its search results is protected under the fair use doctrine.
