Friday Factoid – 2.7.14

Years ago, Frederick Bouchat (the creator of a stylized logo that is similar to the “Flying B” logo previously used by the Baltimore Ravens) filed a lawsuit which caused the Ravens to cease use of the Flying B logo and adopt a new, unrelated logo. More recently, Mr. Bouchat filed another suit claiming that the NFL and the Ravens must pay royalties or obtain his consent to display the “Flying B” logo in videos, on websites or on posters that show the logo as previously used by the Ravens. The United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ruled on December 17, 2013 that use of the Flying B logo for historical reference purposes was a “fair use” and therefore the NFL and the Ravens did not need to obtain Mr. Bouchat’s consent or pay any royalties to him for such use.
