Friday Factoid – 1.10.14

Many great “inventions” are merely accidental discoveries. For example, in 1943, Navy engineer Richard James was researching how springs could be used to stabilize sensitive instruments located on ships. When conducting one of his experiments, he inadvertently knocked over one of the prototypes for his new springs and noticed that the prototype gracefully fell down from its perch and then moved back into its original position. That discovery led to the creation of Slinky® – one of the world’s most popular children’s toys. Source:
