Friday Factoid – 12.14.12

The creation of global top level domains (such as .com, .net and .org) (GTLDs) are administered by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). ICANN recently allowed companies to apply for the right to administer a new GTLD. During this application period (which closed on May 30, 2012) several competing applicants requested the right to create new GLTDs (such as .blog, .cpa, .hotel, .law and .med). ICANN has not yet decided which new GTLDs it will approve.
