Meet the Team

Cannabis Practice Group Co-Founders

As head of the firm’s Intellectual Property Group, Jonathan Wachs works closely with clients to develop, register, analyze, enforce, and transfer intellectual property assets in a customized, cost-efficient, and highly effective manner. He is a sought-after speaker and thought leader on the evolving relationship between cannabis law and intellectual property issues.  He has served as outsourced general counsel to several small and midsize businesses and has developed detailed legal plans of action to help new and prospective cannabusinesses commence operations.  He also organizes and facilitates the Baltimore Chapter of Offit Kurman’s Medical Cannabis Affinity Group, a peer advisory network dedicated to addressing operational issues affecting the cannabis industry.

Darren Weiss

A frequent author and speaker on legal issues affecting the cannabis industry, Darren H. Weiss is a cannabis industry thought leader and a seasoned business counselor and litigator. Mr. Weiss has built his practice working with businesses to maintain, preserve, and protect their most valuable assets. A passionate and experienced legal advocate, Mr. Weiss’s practice focuses on cannabis, hemp, and employment law. His cannabis law practice includes regulatory and compliance work, business transactions and corporate guidance, and labor and employment.

Jason C. Berger

Jason Berger concentrates his practice in the areas of business law (litigation and transactions), labor and employment law, and entertainment law. From Mr. Berger’s formidable reputation as a skilled business litigator, to his consummate attention to detail and singular client-centered focus, Mr. Berger’s clients consider him and the firm an indispensable asset to their growth, success and security.

David L. Brodsky

David L. Brodsky's practice focuses primarily on real estate transactions and corporate law. He handles matters related to the acquisition, disposition, development, financing of real estate and corporate formation, lending, leasing, licensing, succession, and other corporate transactions. Prior to entering private practicing, Mr. Brodsky worked for a local property development and management company where he managed commercial and residential properties.

William H. Cotter is an Associate in the Philadelphia office, where he focuses his practice on Business Services and Estates & Trusts. Will's Business Services experience includes representing individuals, fiduciaries, and closely-held businesses in a wide range of matters, including corporate formation, employment agreements, shareholder, partnership and operating agreements, drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, and analyzing business structures for legal, liability, and taxation issues. In his practice, he also regularly handles both residential and commercial real estate matters for corporate clients.

Meghan K. Finnerty

Meghan Finnerty is a commercial litigator with a varied practice, with an emphasis on assisting corporate and nonprofit policyholders as they navigate disputes with their insurance companies. She has represented companies in fields such as energy, finance, construction, manufacturing and retail in commercial litigation disputes. Ms. Finnerty analyzes available insurance coverage for her clients under environmental, boiler & machinery, professional, D&O, EPLI and commercial general liability policies when a company suffers a loss or is named as a defendant in litigation.

Joseph T. Kelley III

Joseph T. Kelley III is a seasoned health law attorney, focusing his practice on healthcare law and issues of privacy, compliance, regulatory and administrative law. Mr. Kelley serves as compliance and privacy counsel to behavioral health care providers and other large and small businesses. He writes and lectures on Privacy Information Governance and regulatory compliance in Behavioral Health and Long Term Care industries. Prior to joining Offit Kurman, Mr. Kelley served as General Counsel and Privacy Officer at NHS Human Services, one of the largest behavioral health companies in the United States.

Michael N. Mercurio

Michael Mercurio is Chair of the Firm's Business Law and Transactions Practice Group. He serves as outside general counsel to clients on matters related to corporate and business law, commercial transactions, government contracting, health care and real estate. As a strategic partner to firm clients, Mr. Mercurio regularly counsels entrepreneurial individuals and assorted entities on all aspects of business and commerce including formation and structure; ownership, management and control; financing and capital; expansion and acquisition; sale and transfer; and contraction and dissolution. He is well versed in the various issues and challenges companies of all sizes and industries face in the business life cycle including start-up, maturation and end stage considerations.

Kristin M. Nevins

Kristin Mazany Nevins is a registered patent attorney whose practice encompasses all aspects of intellectual property law, including identifying and classifying IP assets, IP procurement, IP portfolio management, and enforcement of IP rights. Ms. Mazany Nevins has significant experience in preparation and prosecution of patent and trademark applications and USPTO practice; IP portfolio development for individual inventors and corporations; drafting license agreements, joint development agreements and technology service agreements; as well as efficient IP due diligence in connection with mergers and acquisitions. Industries served include: biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medical devices, chemical engineering, environmental science, high technology, and e-commerce.

David A. Severn focuses his practice on land use, development and real estate. He represents clients in all aspects of the zoning and land use process appearing regularly before planning commissions, boards of appeal and legislative bodies of Frederick County, Washington County and their municipalities. He has served as lead counsel in numerous large and complex development projects.
