Although many people use the term champagne as a generic reference to sparkling wine, this term should be used exclusively for sparkling wines that come from the Champagne region of France. More than 70 countries have adopted agreements with Europe that limit the use of the term champagne to identify only certain wine products made in the Champagne region. The United States currently bans use of the word champagne to identify any wines now made domestically. Sources: http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/26/5388 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champagne
