William “Bill” Heyman is an experienced commercial litigator with a keen understanding of the financial sector.  His practice primarily focuses on financial services and securities litigation, employment cases, and other complex commercial disputes. He also defends companies, individual directors and officers on behalf of third-party insurers.

A well-respected commercial litigator, Bill Heyman is proficient in representing financial institutions and businesses and acting as insurance panel counsel for corporations and professionals with executive level coverage.  Despite his accomplished courtroom reputation, Mr. Heyman is most appreciated by his clients for his unique combination of cost-effective litigation strategy and persistent approach to representation.

Activities

As an active member of the American Bar Association, Mr. Heyman has served as Subcommittee Chair for the Section of Litigation. In addition to his involvement with the ABA, he serves as Chair of the Casenotes Subcommittee of the Commercial and Business Litigation Committee and is a Co-Chair of the Securities Committee’s Broker-Dealer Litigation Subcommittee.  Bill consistently allocates time to representing clients referred from the Maryland Volunteer Lawyer Services and other like agencies. 

Aside from his legal affiliations, Mr. Heyman devotes his time to the community by serving on the Board of Directors for the Advocates for Children and Youth, a nonprofit organization that serves the interests of Maryland's children. He has also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Ner Tamid Synagogue.

Publications/Speeches

Mr. Heyman has highlighted his legal expertise in multiple publications, including the American Bar Association’s Securities Litigation Journal, Commercial and Business Litigation Journal, and the ABA website.  As an author, he has commented on a wide range of securities and communications-related issues, including Uniform Fiduciary Standards, Blue Sky rules in multistate transactions, attorney-client privilege on workplace computers, and Resale Price Maintenance.

From 2006-09, Mr. Heyman was the author of  the chapter on the definition of a security in the ABA Broker Litigation Annual Survey, a report that identifies and summarizes significant court decisions and administrative proceeding before the SEC and CFTC that involved broker-dealers, investment bankers, and future–commission merchants.

Previous Work

William Heyman joins Offit Kurman after a long career with a prominent Baltimore-based law firm. As a partner in that firm, his reputation for working with his clients to develop effective case strategies, outstanding communication, and returning favorable results, has earned him a spot as one of the area’s most sought-after commercial litigators.

Honors

Earlier this year, the Section of Litigation honored Mr. Heyman as an Outstanding Subcommittee Chair for his contributions in 2009-10. William Heyman has earned the highest level of peer review from Martindale-Hubbell.
